what we’re making

Melbourne Snood - chunky Australian Merino Wool Yarn | Homelea Lass

what we’re making

We’re crocheting a chunky Melbourne Snood. It’s made using lusciously soft Australian merino wool and it won’t take you long to make it.

The Melbourne Snood is crocheted as a rectangle with 6 stitches across and 20 rows. The edges stitches are standard double crochet (single crochet) stitches, and the ribbed centre stitches are double crochet (single crochet) through the back loop. The rectangle is joined on the short ends using a decorative slip stitch.

size

The Melbourne Snood is 18cm (7.1in) high and 70cm (27.6in) around and you can change the size to suit what you’d like.

Over time it may grow a little depending on how you wear and store it – I love how wool responds to each person differently. Want it to go back to the original size? Wash it in cool water with wool wash, and then shape it to the correct size and lie it flat to dry.

The gauge (tension) for this design is approximately 3 rows and 4 stitches in a 10cm (4in) by 10cm (4in) square.

how to change the size

Changing the size of your Melbourne Snood is easy. Here are a few different ways to do it:

  • increase or decrease the number of stitches in the foundation chain to change the height of your snood, or
  • increase or decrease the number of rows to change the length of your Melbourne Snood around your neck, or
  • change the size of your yarn or use a different sized crochet hook to change both the height and length of your snood.

skill level – learn to crochet

The Melbourne Snood is easy to make and I’ll show you exactly what to do in the video tutorials.
